Overextended

The position after a failed offensive or advance, in which a player's position is left with various weaknesses and no compensation for them.

An overextended position results when a player has advanced pawns too far into his opponent's side without sufficient support. The premature advance can leave weaknesses in the player's camp or the advanced pawns themselves may be weak ("overextended pawns").
