Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)

A protocol from Netscape that allows for "secure" passage of data. It uses public key encryption, including digital certificates and digital signatures, to pass data between a browser and a server. It is an open standard and is supported by Netscape's Navigator and Microsoft's Internet Explorer.
