Joint Implementation

Method of achieving reductions in CO2 emissions whereby rich countries (which will probably have made binding commitments to cut emissions) can get partial credit for emission reductions projects which are funded by them, but which are undertaken in poor countries. This is now referred to as the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) to denote respect for developing countries' right to develop. This mechanism is an attempt to make a system of marketable permits more equitable.
