GemStone III is an Internet text-based multiplayer roleplaying game which is set a realm called Elanthia, which is a world loosely based on the fantasy midieval European genre. There is no set "goal" in the game, and the best way to think of it might be as that of a living novel--one with hundreds authors. Though there is a large "hack and slash" element of the game that compels many players, the "roleplaying" aspect is heavily encouraged by game staff.
