Baffle

Front panel of a speaker enclosure on which the drivers are placed. The baffle is an integral part of the speaker enclosure and must be thoroughly sealed to the enclosure. It serves as the mounting point for the speaker drivers themselves. As such, the baffle must be very solid and rigid in order to prevent the speaker drivers from vibrating on it or from creating vibration in the speaker enclosure itself. affles are made of various materials from concrete to solid wood with the most common being MDF (medium density fiberboard). The baffle material is chosen as a compromise between rigidity, the ease with which the material can be handled, cost of a particular material, the drivers being used, and other factors. challenge with speaker baffles is diffraction, a distortion of the sound waves put out by a speaker driver due to reflections off the speaker enclosure and particularly the baffle. In order to combat this, some baffles are angled or rounded at the edges.
