DAT (Digital Audiotape)

Magnetic tape cassette format used to store audio and data digitally. DATs use traditional magnetic tapes to store digital data. They can store up to several gigabytes of data with compression technology. DATs are recordable, but they must be played sequentially (you can’t skip to the next chapter like a CD or DVD). Digital audiotapes are used rarely for consumer audio, but they have found a niche market as a back-up device for computers.
