Digital Field Memory

A feature of certain laserdisc players allowing the use of “special effects” such as slow motion, single frame step playback, pause with the image on the screen and more in any laserdisc format. ll CAV laserdiscs are able to work in the special effects modes and provide enhanced functionality, but these discs hold only 30 or so minutes of video per disc side and often cost somewhat more than their CLV counterparts. CLV discs, by comparison, hold around an hour of video per side but are not able to perform special functions. In order to allow CLV discs to benefit from the special functions available to CAV discs, a digital memory is used. This memory stores information allowing the user to perform CAV-like functions without the CAV discs.
