Divx

Form of DVD that adds special encryption technology to play specially encoded Divx DVD discs on a pay-per-view basis. Divx players cost slightly more than standard DVD players due to the addition of a modem and extra encryption technology, and a Divx player must be connected to a telephone line to transfer viewing information to a central computer. Divx players can play standard DVD discs, but standard DVD players cannot play Divx discs. he Divx format relies on pay-per-view technology combined with DVD technology. A user purchases a Divx disc at a retail store for around $4 to $5. The user then has 48 hours to watch the disc from the first viewing. Subsequent viewings are charged to the user’s account at a rate of $3.50 per viewing. Divx discs can be upgraded to unlimited viewing; however, this upgrade is only operable on a single machine (if a friend borrows an upgraded, unlimited viewing disc he will still have to pay to use it on his machine). ivx does not feature widescreen formats or other special features on its discs such as multi-language subtitles, multiple camera angles, and multi-language soundtracks (standard DVD does feature these additions). As a modification to DVD, Divx has caused a great deal of strife in the audio/video industry. It is an inferior format to DVD mainly because of its lack of additional functionality (the video quality, sound quality, etc. are the same).
