Spikes

Pointed objects attached to the bottom of speakers in an effort to improve the speakers’ sound quality by firmly stabilizing it on the floor while also disconnecting it from the floor. Spikes are typically small metal pieces that screw into a speaker’s base and are around half an inch to an inch long. The spikes lift the speaker off the floor thus decreasing floor vibrations created through the speaker sitting on the floor (vibrations transferred through the speaker enclosure to the floor where the enclosure touches the floor). pikes also allow speakers to be more firmly seated on the floor, particularly in carpet. On carpet or some other soft material, speakers may be prone to rocking. Spikes go down into and through the carpet to anchor the speaker to the actual floor thus inhibiting rocking and swaying which may damage sound quality and make the speakers less stable. Spikes are used mainly in high-end systems in order to achieve incremental gains in sound quality.
