Bel canto

A style of singing emphasising the melody. Originated in the Baroque era. Appeared in cantata and opera simultaneously. Frequently uses IV-V-I and IIb-V-I cadences in short phrases. Powerfully influenced the slow movements of Baroque concerto and sonatas.
