Contraction

In adaptation, the process of (necessary) selection of certain elements to transfer or adapt from novel to film. Theoretically, the greater the complexity of the source novel, more severe the degree of contraction; a less-detailed novella or short story should entail a lesser degree of contraction than would a long, complex novel.
