Double Hull Tanker

A tanker in which the bottom and sides of the cargo tanks are separated from the bottom and sides of the hull by spaces of up to 1 to 3 metres width or depth. These spaces are empty when the tanker carries cargo but full of sea water on the ballast voyage. See also: double bottom tanker.
