Drilling Mud

A mixture of clays, water and chemicals used in drilling operations to lubricate and cool the drill bit, carry drilling wastes to the surface, prevent the walls of the well from collapsing, and to keep the upward flow of oil or gas under control. It is circulated continuously down the drill string and up to the surface between the drill pipe and the wall of the hole.
