Representativeness Heuristic

A rule-of-thumb strategy that estimates the probability of an event based on how typical that event is.

Basing one’s judgments on information that seems to represent, or match, what we expect will happen, while ignoring other potentially more relevant statistical information. The tendency for people to arrive at a decision quickly by simply judging the likelihood of the object belonging to a category, based on how similar it is to one’s mental representation of that category.
