Control Area

An electric system bounded by transmission lines that are equipped with metering and telemetry equipment to track and report power flows with adjacent control areas. A control center for each control area controls the operation of generation within its portion of the transmission grid, schedules interchanges with other control areas, and helps to stabilize the frequency of alternating current in the interconnection. Control centers are currently operated by individual utilities, power pools, ISOs or RTOs.
