A combination receiver, transmitter and antenna package on a satellite. The signal is received from the uplink station and downlinked back to Earth on a different frequency. Most C-band satellites have 24 transponders (12 vertical, 12 horizontal polarization); most Ku-band satellites have 16, although the Canadian Anik birds have 32. Some satellites have a mix of C-band and Ku-band transponders.
