MPEG

(Motion Picture Experts Group ) It is the nickname given to a family of International Standards used for coding audio-visual information in a digital compressed format. MPEG standards include MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4, formally known as ISO/IEC-11172, ISO/IEC-13818 and ISO/IEC-14496. MPEG is originally the name given to the group of experts that developed these standards.Established in 1988, the MPEG working group (formally known as ISO/IEC JTC1/SC29/WG11) is part of JTC1, the Joint ISO/IEC Technical Committee on Information Technology. MPEG-1, is the standard on which such products as Video CD and MP3 are based. MPEG-2 the standard on which such products as Digital Television set top boxes and DVD are based and MPEG-4, the standard for multimedia on the web. The current thrust is MPEG-7 "Multimedia Content Description Interface".
