Islanding

The phenomenon by which a piece of the electrical network which has become disconnected from the rest of the network (for instance due to a lightning strike on an overhead pylon) continues to function, as the power sources on that section of the grid (for example a wind farm) continue to supply the loads. Islanding is a serious problem that can result in danger to personnel and damage to equipment; a number of safeguards are used to try to prevent it.
