Sophist

Teachers in 5th Century B.C. Greece who took payment for lecturing. Later Sophists were known for presenting convoluted lectures on political subjects to further their own means. Clement of Alexander denounced them for distorting truths. ""But the art of sophistry, which the Greeks cultivated, is a fantastic power, which makes false opinions like true by means of words. For it produces rhetoric in order to persuasion, and disputation for wrangling. These arts, therefore, if not conjoined with philosophy, will be injurious to every one. For Plato openly called sophistry "an evil art. "(See W. K. C. Guthrie, Sophists (1971); H. Diels, ed., The Older Sophists (1972). "Stromata" Bk 1. ) http://www.newadvent.org/fathers/02101.htm
