An industry wide set of specification for sound sources that allows music data to be transferred around regardless of different brands. Much the same way that Windows has become a standard for PC's and information created on one type of software can be transferred to another PC providing it has the same software. You are best advised not to buy any computer music sound equipment that doesn't bear the GM logo.
