Directivity

Perception of how well the sound from a speaker can be located as coming from that speaker; degree to which sound from a speaker travels in a straight line to the listener and can be perceived as coming from a specific source. Directivity does not have a specific measure but is instead more of a feeling or opinion on the sound. A speaker that is highly directive emanates sound in a straight path toward the user in more of a pin-point fashion. A speaker with little directivity, by contrast, presents a diffuse, all-around sound that is not easy to localize. raditional direct radiating speakers tend to have higher directivity than dipolar or bipolar designs. Dipolar and bipolar speakers emanate sound from two opposing sides of a speaker enclosure creating a broad soundstage lacking in some imaging. These designs are less directive; they are more difficult to exactly locate by sound alone.
