Drilling Fluid

A fluid circulated through the bit which serves to carry cuttings from the bit to the surface. Hole conditions may dictate other necessary functions for this fluid, such as cooling the bit and to counteract downhole formation pressure. The most common drilling fluid is a mixture of clay and other minerals with water, but can also be air, gas, water or foam systems.
