Anaerobic

Conditions that are free of molecular oxygen. In soils this is usually caused by excessive wetness. Compost: composting environment characterized by bacteria active in the absence of oxygen (anaerobes). In anaerobic composting, the microflora obtain oxygen from the waste; peak temperatures may reach 100 to 130_F; digestion requires more time, foul odors are created and pathogens may survive.
