Diffusion coefficient (DM or DS)

A fundamental parameter of a molecule in gas, solution (DM), or the stationary phase (DS). Expressed in square centimeters per second. DM is dependent on the molecular weight of the solute, temperature, solvent viscosity, and molar volume of the solute. A typical value for a 100-Da molecule in reversed-phase chromatography at room temperature is 10—5 cm2/s.
