Glossary MIDI & Computer Music / Term

Interface

A physical object that is the link between different entities enabling communication. In context of this glossary it enables a midi keyboard (or guitar etc) to talk to a computer. Interfaces can often be combined with sound sources and other MIDI devices. A basic MIDI device usually has one MIDI input and one MIDI output. MIDI devices with two or more extra inputs allow you to connect to more gear. MIDI devices with 8 ins and 8 outs allow you to connect many devices into your computer and can act as a patch bay. You can also play and record multiple sounds from different MIDI keyboards and modules using one computer program.
