Cassette

Plastic container holding a magnetic tape, which contains audio or video signals that can be read and played back when the tape is pulled over a magnetic reader of the appropriate type. The two primary types of cassettes seen are VHS tapes and standard audiotapes with a fair number of eight millimeter tapes available for use in camcorders. The cassette holds the magnetic tape wrapped on two rotating cylinders. When the cylinders are rotated by the cassette player, the tape is pulled from one to the other across the player’s head (the component of the player that reads the magnetic information from the tape).
